Our story
The coffee matters — that’s in the name. But the real product is the hour you spend here: the seat, the light, the person across the table.
High ceilings and columns, ornate mouldings, spacious seating — rooms with Italian bones and Newfoundland manners. Four blends of fair-trade, organic coffee roasted right here in the province, our own line of desserts, and soups and sandwiches made fresh, never from a deli counter.
The owners
Owner / Operator
In food service since he was fifteen, Scott still spends his days behind the counter — pouring coffee, making sandwiches, clearing the odd table. He sits on the boards of Hospitality NL and the Restaurant Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, and believes the whole business comes down to three things: great service, top-notch food, and a room you want to stay in.
Owner / Operator
Cyril learned hard work going door to door selling his parents’ vegetable harvest as a boy. Years running prepared foods at Sobeys and two decades at Costco taught him fast, professional service — values he brought straight to Coffee Matters, where he also runs our sister operation, Canteen Matters.

Ran cafés from downtown St. John’s to Vancouver before joining to keep every room consistent, every visit right.
Events Coordinator
Plans our most complex events and meets every wedding client in person — tasting menu on the table before anything is signed.
Manager, Manuels River
Runs our riverside catering venue at the Manuels River Interpretation Centre, from conferences to “lunch on the rocks.”

With us since 2012 and always up for a chat — she will be sure to brighten your day.
Community
From the Vera Perlin Society’s appreciation luncheons to charity golf tournaments and the Paradise Running Club dropping by post-run — this company shows up for its neighbours. It has since day one, and that’s not changing.
